It is everyone's favorite time of year when the College Football Rankings from the Playoff Committee come out. This is the first year of the 12-team college football playoff.
Again, these are the first rankings, and things can change throughout them. But these rankings always spark debate about whether they are the first or last, and that is what makes College Football so great.
Even though these are the first rankings, we get to see what the College Football Playoff Committee is thinking.
FIRST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS
Here are some takeaways from the first rankings. Clearly, we are headed to two conferences, the SEC and Big Ten. But that is done for now.
Four SEC teams are currently in these rankings: Georgia, seeded second and ranked third; Texas, ranked fifth but ranked sixth; Tennessee, ranked seventh but seeded eighth; and Alabama, seeded and ranked 11th, with Texas A&M on the outside looking in at 14.
Oregon is ranked number one in the Big Ten, Penn State is ranked sixth and seventh, and Indiana is ranked eighth and seeded seventh.
The ACC only has the Miami Hurricanes seeded third and fourth, with SMU ranked 13th. Again, SMU still has a shot at the title game, and if they win, it could throw a monkey wrench into this whole thing.

What’s interesting is that BYU and Boise State are so close. While BYU is seeded fourth in the Big 12, there is a chance that Boise State passes them if the Cougars don’t win out and win the conference.
The committee viewed the eye test, and they clearly saw what Indiana was doing. They still have a couple of tests to pass. The committee also values how you lose or win.
With Alabama at 11, Tennessee’s win over the Crimson Tide ranks them higher. Penn State just lost to Ohio State, but because Oregon leads the Big Ten, the Buckeyes are at five and probably don’t want to see Boise State again. We all remember the Fiesta Bowl.
Penn State would have to play Notre Dame, which would be an interesting matchup. But how you win and lose matters. But again, the committee values the Big Ten and SEC over the ACC and Big 12.
Again this is just the first rankings, but you know someone will be upset.
