You Can't Have Your Way Jerry Jones
To quote an old high school teacher, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones must realize that “This isn’t Burger King. You can’t have it your way.”
This quote is relevant today because of what happened between Shan Shariff and RJ Choppy, the hosts of 105.3 The Fans in Dallas. For those who did not see it, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones went on his weekly radio spot on the station and threatened the ’ jobs’ because he did not like the line of questioning.
The radio show hosts were doing their job critiquing and criticizing the Dallas Cowboys' general manager for the off-season failures. However, there is no dynamic like this in sports where the owner and general manager are the same person.
But every other GM in the NFL would be open to that same line of questioning. However, no other owner is going to have a weekly radio spot. So it is quite the dynamic.
Mr. Jones, you can’t pick and choose the line of questioning in the profession you chose. Questions will be hard, primarily when the team does not address needs in the offseason.

As stated on the Rod Pedersen Show on Wednesday, the Cowboys needed a running back and help on the defensive line.
Dallas could have signed Derrick Henry, the leading rusher right now in the NFL, but Jones decided that waiting until a week before the season started was a good idea to sign Ceedee Lamb to an extension. Not to mention signing quarterback Dak Prescott to an extension right before Game 1 of the new season.
If they had received the help they needed, there would have been money to make these deals work. So it should have come as no surprise that teams are running all over the Cowboys. While it was an embarrassing loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, anybody who is anybody saw that coming.
The only person who did not see it coming was Jerry Jones, who turned 82 on Sunday.
But this problem goes back years. While the Cowboys have made the playoffs, they have yet to advance past the Divisional Round. The last time the Dallas Cowboys were in the NFC Championship Game was in the 1995-96 season when they won the Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
This is all about ego for Jerry Jones. He is competitive, and he does not like to lose. That is one of the reasons he fired Jimmy Johnson. If everyone remembers, Jones hired Johnson as coach and general manager. What happened was that the team had success.
However, Jerry Jones did not get the credit. Everyone praised Jimmy Johnson for his work, making the Cowboys contenders and champions again in 1992 and 1993. But Jerry Jones wanted to get his hands in the pot, and these two men butted heads leading to Johnson leaving.
Though the Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1996, they have not won a championship since Jerry Jones took over as general manager. Those were Johnson’s players who won in 1996.
Like anything in life, this comes down to the ego. Jerry Jones has a big ego and can’t admit he is wrong.
It’s time for Jerry Jones, the owner, to fire Jerry Jones, the General Manager. However, until that happens, the Dallas Cowboys will continue to struggle.
