What Are The New York Giants Doing?
Quarterback Decisions Little To More Questions Than Answers
Many people are questioning what the New York Giants are doing at the quarterback position. Four days after signing Jameis Winston to a two-year deal, the Giants announced they have signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal that guarantees him $10.5 million.
To quote the late, great Bob Uecker, who played Harry Doyle in the Major League movie franchise, “Taylor is Thinking, I Don’t Know What the Hell He is Thinking!”
That line was uttered when Rick Vaughan, played by Charlie Sheen, walked Beck to get to Jack Parkman and loaded the bases with the Cleveland Indians in the lead over the Chicago White Sox. It is a movie, and Vaughn got his nemesis to strike out.
However, the same can be said for Giants GM Joe Schoen, who continues to make bad decisions after bad decisions. It started with not re-signing Saquon Barkley, who went on to win a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.
This was on HBO Hard Knocks Offseason edition. That show is no longer happening because of the scene involving Schoen and Mara discussing Barkley and how Mara stated Please God, I hope he doesn’t go to Philadelphia. ”
In the same episode, you hear Schoen’s kid say to draft Jayden Daniels. He knew how special Daniels would be. Then he gets out of the Daniel Jones deal that he gave him, so he isn’t on the hook for guaranteed money.
But worst of all, they wait until a month into the draft to sign Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston with Tommy DeVito as the third. Not to mention the Giants could still select a QB at number 3 in the NFL Draft.
It makes sense to sign one of Wilson and Winston, not both. Not to mention, Wilson has a chance to make $21 million. Did Schoen not see the end of his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers? The guy who took over for Justin Fields was not the same guy who finished the season in Pittsburgh.

Wilson is on the decline. While he can still scramble and throw the ball down the field, why did you sign Jameis Winston to a two-year deal to potentially be a backup quarterback?
As stated on the Night Cap Recap and on other platforms, the New York Giants needed a mobile quarterback because of how poor their offensive line is. However, Winston was made for New York with his quotes and his ability to move the ball down the field. You know what you are getting with Jameis: feast or famine.
Jameis Winston could throw for 500 yards and 5 TDs, but could throw 3 INTs as well. The same goes for Russell Wilson. But Jameis is much more entertaining. It never made sense for them to look to have another veteran backup guy if they didn’t believe Jameis could be the starter in the first place.
A two-year deal that totals close to $16 million does not make sense. A one-year deal, with the Giants bringing in Russ to Cook, okay, that makes sense. But a two-year deal to be a backup does not. Jameis has the talent to take Russell Wilson's starting job away.
And, say the Giants draft Shedeur Sanders, where does he fit in the mix of everything? Unless the Giants are going defense and waiting until next year for a QB. That would make sense. Daft Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter.
However, why would the Giants do that? That makes too much sense. The Giants are a bad team and will be picking high again next season. However, as documented, coaches and GMs are doing a balancing act: Draft and develop, but win, too. However, this team isn’t winning even with the weapons.
This was just a desperate move by a man who will probably not be the GM of the team next season. They got lucky in their run to the playoffs when Barkley carried them there with Jones as QB. Now they are paying for it.
Again, this Giants management staff continues to prove they don’t know what the Giant Way is. Maybe John Mara needs to get a little Jerry Jones in him and make some of the decisions to get this team back to relevancy instead of a laughing stock.
Right now, that is what the New York Giants are with moves like this.
